Currently,
Del Mar's TOT
(transient
occupancy tax)
is set at 10.5%,
generating $1,750,000
for the city
annually, a
major source
of our
revenue. This
tax rate, paid
by visitors
to hotels, is
lower than fees
charged in
neighboring
San Diego (10.5
% + 2 % Tourist
Marketing District
fee) and Solana
Beach (13% TOT,
effective Jan.
1, 2009). By
law, Del Mar
must obtain voter
approval to
raise the TOT.
Therefore, the
city is considering
submitting a
ballot measure
for the Nov.
4, 2008 allowing
the city to
set a
TOT rate of
up to 13%. more>> |

The
Garden Del Mar
Project took an
unexpected turn
after the July
21 City Council
discussion [...]
In a widely distributed
e-mail sent early
the next morning,
developer Bryn
Stroyke announced
that he had decided
not to move forward
with the application,
stating that, “the
project can no
longer proceed
as envisioned
and that the incredibly
tight schedule
has been dealt
a fatal blow”,
attributing this
decision to comments
made by Site Steering
Committee members
at the meeting. more>>

A
hastily assembled
special meeting
of the Gas Station
Site Steering
Committee on
July 24, following
City Council's
deliberations
on the Garden
Del Mar Project's
Specific Plan,
though heated
at times, has
hopefully brought
a more reasoned
perspective
to the efforts
to move the
Plan to a November

Historically
Del Mar's reputation
in San Diego
County has been
a leader on
environmental
issues such
as the protection
and acquisition
of open space
and in the forefront
of efforts on
regional projects
such as the
revitalization
of the San Dieguito
Lagoon. Given
this reputation
it is natural
for Del Mar
to develop its
own green vision
and to step
up once again
to lead and
become an example
of how communities,
especially smaller
communities,
can participate
in areas of
environmental
sustainability. more>> |

distributing
a ballot package
by mail to all

are two important
questions.
